Among the top players at the tournament were GM Alex Yermolinsky of San Francisco, shown seated at right in this photo, analyzing with GM Melik their game, a very tough one which ended drawn.

The photo on the left shows the large crowds that local GM Varuzhan Akobian attracts whenever he plays blitz. He's seated on the right playing against Alan Stein in the hotel lobby. GM Var dropped by the tournament to lend encouragement to one of his students playing in the tournament.

We were deeply saddened to hear the news today of the unexpected passing away of Razmik Abrahamyan, beloved father of Tatev Abrahamyan. Razmik accompanied Tatev to Las Vegas last week, while she was participating in the North American Open Chess Tournament. The cause was a severe stroke. He was only 54.
Tatev Abrahamyan, 18, who has continuously represented the US in the World Youth Championships is among the strongest female chess players in the nation and the strongest in California. She received 2nd place in the 2005 US Women's Championship, won the Pan American Championship in 2006, and attained a WGM norm in the World Juniors, October 2006 in Armenia. Those who know Tatev are well acquainted with her father and his dedication and love for his daughter. He was a very pleasant man who will be missed tremendously.
Razmik untimely passing away came as a major shock to the family. Unfortunately, the family is at a dire financial situation and they are struggling to prepare the funeral services to be tentatively held on Friday, January 5th. Those who would like to contribute in donations, please contact:
Armen Ambartsoumian at (818) 640-5974 or
Nshan Keshishian at (323) 578-8424
If you would like to directly contribute to the family, the address is:
123 W. Chevy Chase Drive Apt. #4 Glendale, CA 91204
We will keep you updated on the exact time and place of the funeral services.
--Harut Akopyan
Tatev, our hearts go out to you and your family at this time of mourning.
